Out of the Kitchen: September 2014 Seasonal Recipes & Tips

We’re back with another Out of the Kitchen update! Here’s a look at what we were up to in September.

Outofthekitchen1Sept2014Ryan surprised me with banana walnut rum crepes — our first time making crepes and they were so good. We didn’t have them for breakfast; they became a late-night snack one Friday at 10 p.m. I wish we’d made extra so I could have enjoyed them the next morning. Also a behind-the-scenes look at the apple and maple butter pop tarts I shared earlier. September ended up being a very apple-focused month for me: I tried many apple recipes and even ran Apple Week on the blog.

Outofthekitchen2Sept2014Many of you know I work as a nanny, so my days are often filled with play-doh — and I love it. I practiced making play-doh roses and tiny food items. Ryan showed off his deep-fried Oreos at the annual corn festival; they were tempting even though they were full of gluten. We missed out on fresh corn because they sold out, so we settled for kettle corn instead.

Outofthekitchen3Sept2014I visited our local vintage store for the first time — how did I go so long without going? It’s huge and full of great finds. I picked up some cast iron skillets, a tin plate, and beautiful vintage utensils. I’ll share more photos after my next trip.

Outofthekitchen4Sept2014Behind the scenes: I hung a white sheet to soften my backlight. Since I shoot mostly with backlight now and have the porch door covered, my neighbors won’t get an odd view of me standing on kitchen chairs to photograph food. Also, a snap from our DQ date — my go-to is the Reese’s Blizzard with extra Reese’s. What’s yours?

Outofthekitchen5Sept2014A lovely September sunrise — I like to start my day with Bible study, and this view made that morning even better. I also received a large package from OXO and The Container Store; expect a pantry makeover post later in October. And yes, those strange tan lines on my feet are from wearing my Toms all summer.

Outofthekitchen6Sept2014Hello salad! Ryan and I ate at a local spot people rave about — surprisingly, that whole plate was just $2. We also toured an “orange room” on campus that’s part of a facility where they build computer chips. Everyone must be dust-free to enter: you get vacuumed off and suit up in a full-body suit and hair net. I’m glad I didn’t go into engineering — sorry, Dad!

Outofthekitchen8Sept2014Ryan and I at the apple orchard — his family visited in September and we had a great time. We took them to the farmer’s market, the orchard, and taught them our favorite dice game, Farkel. They helped us give away our old swirly pastel couch, which used to be theirs; the new owners were thrilled. We still haven’t replaced it, and for now we’re enjoying the extra floor space in our small house.

Outofthekitchen7Sept2014Yes, I tossed an entire pan of cinnamon rolls in the trash. I experimented with coffee cinnamon rolls and they turned out dense and very dry. Even food bloggers have failures — I clearly need lessons on cinnamon roll technique. Also a sneak peek at the Candy Bar Cake I’m developing: it’s perfect for using leftover Halloween candy, and that recipe will be posted in October.
