I’ve been meaning to write this post for ages—finally, here it is: my 12 all-time favorite cookbooks. Narrowing the list was tough, but I included a variety of books covering desserts, small-batch baking, bread, everyday meals and more. Each of these has earned a permanent place on my shelf for good reason.

Since this post coincides with Amazon Prime Day, it’s a great moment to pick up a new cookbook or find a thoughtful gift. I’ve listed each book with a short note about why I love it so you can find inspiration fast.
Let’s dive in!

1. The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook
This was one of my best cookbook purchases. It’s organized into fun sections—Mrs. Weasley’s favorites, Hagrid’s rustic treats, and Hogwarts dining hall recipes. If you love themed cooking or experimenting with playful recipes, try the pumpkin juice and some of the cozy, nostalgic dishes.

2. Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day
For anyone intimidated by bread baking, this book is a game changer. It breaks down techniques into easy steps with plenty of make-ahead tips. The method turns complicated loaves into approachable projects—try the brioche; it’s worth it.

3. Magnolia Table
This cookbook is a warm collection of breakfast dishes, desserts and comforting dinners. If you like Hearth & Hand style cooking, you’ll enjoy the straightforward recipes—don’t miss the Cinnamon Squares and Chicken Spaghetti.

4. The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook & Smitten Kitchen Every Day
Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen is one of the original food bloggers, and her books are full of reliable, delicious recipes. There’s a wide range from weeknight favorites to impressive desserts, with many vegetarian options. Favorites of mine include the Peach Dumplings with Bourbon Hard Sauce and the Short Rib Carnitas.

5. Half Baked Harvest
This book pairs stunning photography with creative, flavorful recipes. The variety is excellent—try the Sunday Meatballs cooked in a cast-iron skillet and the fun Surprise Tiramisu Cupcakes.

6. Paleo Takeout
If you want lighter versions of takeout favorites, this book delivers. From Kung Pao Pork and General Tso’s to standout Orange Chicken, the recipes recreate the flavors you crave with healthier ingredients. The burgers and fried chicken adaptations are also excellent.

7. Seriously Delish
Creative and indulgent, this cookbook is full of show-stopping recipes like Slow Cooker Short Rib Breakfast Hash and S’mores Hot Fudge Shakes. The Oatmeal Apple Butter Bars are perfect for an easy, satisfying dessert.

8. The Pretty Dish
From the same author as Seriously Delish, this was one of the first cookbooks that felt like I could make nearly every recipe. The tomato bisque is outstanding, and the Blueberry Peach Cobbler Bars are a must when peaches are in season.

9. Sweet & Simple: Dessert for Two
This small-batch dessert book is ideal if you want just enough for two without leftovers tempting you for days. Recipes yield modest portions—brownies, cookies and cupcakes that satisfy without overindulging.

10. Clean Eating with a Dirty Mind
Perfect for enjoying cleaner versions of indulgent treats. Many desserts are fully or nearly paleo—S’mores Bars and Brownie Crumb Donuts stand out—and there’s a small section of mostly paleo main dishes too.

11. The Little House Cookbook
If you grew up with the Little House books, this cookbook is a nostalgic treasure. It compiles the recipes mentioned in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s stories, complete with illustrations and excerpts. I may not cook from it every week, but I love the memory and charm it brings.

12. Mom’s Recipes
This is the most special cookbook on the list because it isn’t sold in stores—my mom compiled it for me. It contains family favorites from my mom, grandparents and friends, all preserved in plastic sleeves to survive my messy cooking habits. Some personal favorites are Mom’s Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake and Lemon Basil Cookies.
That’s my list—12 cookbooks I reach for again and again. I’d love to hear your top recommendations, so please share them in the comments. Happy reading and happy cooking—may these books bring you plenty of delicious inspiration!
