I’m nostalgic for classic, old-fashioned meals—especially the ones my mom used to make. Coming home hungry from school and finding the kitchen filled with a warm, savory dinner is a memory I treasure. Meals with gravy were always extra special, and paired with mashed potatoes they felt like the ultimate comfort food.

These hamburger steaks are a favorite for chilly evenings. They come together quickly, and the onion gravy is simple yet deeply flavorful.

Description

These hamburger steaks are a quick, easy weeknight meal that’s perfect on a chilly evening. They’re hearty, satisfying, and comforting.

Ingredients

HAMBURGER STEAKS

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground chuck (80/20)
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons canola or vegetable oil

GRAVY

  • 1 large onion, cut in half then sliced
  • 1 can beef broth (14 ounces) plus water to make 2 cups total
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Kitchen Bouquet
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

HAMBURGER STEAKS

  1. Add the 1/2 cup flour to a shallow dish and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl combine the ground chuck, diced onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix gently by hand—do not overwork the meat. Form into 4 to 5 patties, depending on desired size.
  3. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Dip each patty in the flour to coat both sides, then fry in the skillet until browned and cooked through. Remove patties and set aside. Drain all but about 2 tablespoons of fat from the skillet.

GRAVY

  1. Add the sliced onions to the skillet and cook over medium heat, stirring often, until tender and translucent, about 8 to 10 minutes.
  2. In a bowl or large measuring cup whisk together the beef broth, water (to total 2 cups), 1/4 cup flour, salt, pepper, Kitchen Bouquet, and Worcestershire sauce. Pour into the skillet with the onions and whisk constantly over medium heat until the gravy thickens. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and simmer on low about 15 minutes to meld flavors.
  3. Serve the hamburger steaks with mashed potatoes and a green vegetable.

Notes

  • Kitchen Bouquet is a browning and seasoning sauce that enhances the gravy’s color and flavor. It adds depth—try not to skip it.
