Authentic Basmati Rice Recipe for Fluffy, Fragrant Grains

I was planning to cook basmati rice and wondered whether soaking it is healthier. I soak beans and nuts to reduce enzyme inhibitors, so I researched soaking basmati and other long-grain rices. Soaking helps reduce some nutrient blockers and makes the rice easier to digest. It also shortens cooking time. Rinsing before cooking removes excess surface starch, which yields fluffy, non-sticky basmati rice. I often serve this with my Chicken Korma. Enjoy!

Basic Basmati Rice Recipe

A simple method for perfectly fluffy basmati rice that’s easier to digest and not sticky.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup basmati rice
  • 7/8 cup (3/4 cup + 2 Tbsp.) water
  • 1/16 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the rice in a fine mesh strainer under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes surface starch that makes rice gummy and sticky.
  2. Soak the rinsed rice in fresh water, covered, for 30 minutes to reduce cooking time and improve digestibility.
  3. Drain the soaked rice in the same fine mesh strainer. Transfer it to a medium-size saucepan (avoid a narrow-bottom pan) and bring to a gentle boil over medium heat.
  4. Cover, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
  5. Remove from heat and let the rice rest, covered, for 5 to 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork and serve.

Tips

You can prepare the rice a couple of hours ahead and keep it covered on the stovetop. When ready to serve, ensure any accompanying sauce or topping is piping hot.
